This paper presents an overview of the most recent state of the art in the field of high-speed electric machines fed through high-frequency converters. This type of systems is rapidly wide spreading in aeronautical and automotive applications, as well as microturbines. Each typology has its own advantages and downsides, which are analytically presented in this paper. Some types of high-speed electric machines require high-frequency voltage supply, highly stressing the dielectric materials of the winding insulation system. Static output-feedback controller design for vehicle suspensions: an effective two-step computational approach

In this study, a novel two-step methodology is applied in designing static output-feedback controllers for a class of vehicle suspension systems. Following this approach, an effective synthesis of static output-feedback controllers can be carried out by solving two consecutive linear matrix inequality optimisation problems. A saturated strategy robustly ensures stability of the cooperative equilibrium for Prisoner's dilemma

We study diffusion of cooperation in a two-population game in continuous time. At each instant, the game involves two random individuals, one from each population. The game has the structure of a Prisoner's dilemma where each player can choose either to cooperate (c) or to defect (d), and is reframed within the field of approachability in two-player repeated game with vector payoffs. We turn the game into a dynamical system, which is positive, and propose a saturated strategy that ensures local asymptotic stability of the equilibrium (c, c) for any possible choice of the payoff matrix. Vibration control strategy for large-scale structures with incomplete multi-actuator system and neighbouring state information

The synthesis of optimal controllers for vibrational protection of large-scale structures with multiple actuation devices and partial state information is a challenging problem. Time-Optimal Synthesis for Three Relevant Problems: The Brockett Integrator, the Grushin Plane and the Martinet Distribution

We construct the time-optimal synthesis for 3 problems that are linear in the control and with polytopic constraints in the controls. Namely, the Brockett integrator, the Grushin plane, and the Martinet distribution. The main purpose is to illustrate the steps in solving an optimal control problem and in particular the use of second order conditions. The Grushin and the Martinet case are particularly important: the first is the prototype of a rank-varying distribution, the second of a non-equiregular structure.

Design of temperature control system using conventional PID and Intelligent Fuzzy Logic controller

In this paper, we present the design of temperature control for industrial heat treating furnace by using Intelligent Fuzzy Logic and PID controllers. Temperature control is important in heating processes as it can disqualify materials in terms of their physical properties when not well performed. Obviously PID temperature controller is the most used in industries to control non-linear processes. Consequently, it has been found that the output response from Fuzzy Logic is very accurate in terms of overshoot and steady state error when compared to that of PID. Moreover, both temperature controllers are modeled and simulated using MATLAB software.

Corners in non-equiregular sub-Riemannian manifolds

We prove that in a class of non-equiregular sub-Riemannian manifolds corners are not length minimizing. This extends the results of (G.P. Leonardi and R. Monti, Geom. Funct. Anal. 18 (2008) 552-582). As an application of our main result we complete and simplify the analysis in (R. Monti, Ann. Mat. Pura Appl. (2013)), showing that in a 4-dimensional sub-Riemannian structure suggested by Agrachev and Gauthier all length-minimizing curves are smooth. Mathematics Subject Classification. 53C17, 49K21, 49J15.

Mean Field Linear Quadratic Games with Set Up Costs

This paper studies linear quadratic games with set up costs monotonic on the number of active players, namely, players whose action is non-null. Such games arise naturally in joint replenishment inventory systems. Building upon a preliminary analysis of the properties of the best response strategies and Nash equilibria for the given game, the main contribution is the study of the same game under large population. We also analyze the influence of an additional disturbance in the spirit of the literature on H∞ control. Numerical illustrations are provided. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

Wave Energy Assessment around the Aegadian Islands (Sicily)

This paper presents the estimation of the wave energy potential around the Aegadian islands (Italy), carried out on the basis of high resolution wave hindcast. This reanalysis was developed employing Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) and WAVEWATCH III ® models for the modelling of the atmosphere and the waves, respectively. Wave climate has been determined using the above-mentioned 32-year dataset covering the years from 1979 to 2010.
